ing the Streets and other public Places within the
King's Town of

in the County of Kenti
and better fupplying the Inhabitants with Water;
and for watching the faid Town, and making

HEREAS anl was paffed in
the
Thirty-firft Year of theReign
of His prefent Majefty, intituled An Aft for widening, improv-

the Streets,
Lanes^
and other public
Pajfages
and
Places
within
the
King's Town of Maidftone, in
the
County of
Kent; jor
removing
and preventing
hcroachments,
Obftruclions,
Nuifances, and
Annoyances
therein; for better fupplying the faid Town
with Water; and for repairing the Highways within the Parijh of Maid-
ftone : And whereas the Commiflioners appointed to put the faid Aft in
Execution were thereby authorized, once in every Year, to rate.and affefs
any Sum not exceeding One Shilling and Sixpence in the Pound upon the
feveral Tenants or Occupiers of all Houfes, Oafts, Buildings, Yards,
Gardens, Lands, Rents, Revenues, Tenements, and Hereditaments within
the faid Town, according.to the annual Value of the fame refpe&ively, as
therein is expreffed, for defraying the Expences of carrying the faid A3:
into Execution ; and were alfo authorized to borrow and take up at Inte*
reft, upon the Credit of thefaid Rates or Affeffments, and the Highway

Compofition Money, any Sum not exceeding Seven thoufand Pounds, for
the more expeditious ^Performance of the then feveral intended Improve-
ments : And whereasine faid Commiffioners accordingly borrowed and
expended tjhe whole 'of the faid Sum of Seven thoufand Pounds, and alfo
incurred confiderable I)ebts in Addition thereto : And whereas by another

authorized, once in every Year, to rate and affefs. any further Sum not ex-
ceeding Four-pence in the Pound, in Addition to the faid Rate or
Affeff-
ment of One Shilling and Sixpence in the Pound, authorized by the faid firft
recited Aft, upon the feveral Tenants or Occupiers of Houfes, Oafts, Build-
ings,
Yards, Gardens, Lands, Rents, Revenues, Tenements, and Heredita*
ments within the faidTown of .Maidftone, according to the annual Value
pf the fame refpecT;ively: And whereas the faid Commiffioners have,
under the Authority of the faid feveral recited Afts, and for the Purpofes
thereof,
endeavoured to borrow further Sums of Money, but have not
been able to procure the fame, by reafon that the faid B.ates or Affeffments,
and Highway Compofition Money, authorized to be made and impofed by
the fame recited Ads, are not fufficient to induce Perfons to lend more
Money on the Credit
thereof:
And whereas for the more fully and effec-
tually carrying into Execution the good Purpofes of the faid feveral recited
Acis,
and for making ftill further Improvements in the faid Town, it is
neceffary that the faid Commiffioners fhould be empowered to increafe the
faid feveral Rates or Affeffments authorized to be made and impofed by
