CHAPTER cxxiv.
An Act to confer further powers upon the lord
A.D.
1935.
mayor aldermen and citizens of the city and
county of Newcastle-upon-Tyne with reference
to the good government and public health of
the city to make provisions relating to their
parks to amend and consolidate provisions re-
lating to their road transport undertaking and
the provisions relating to the finances of the
city and for other purposes. [2nd August 1935.]

HEREAS the city and county of Newcastle-upon-
Tyne (hereinafter referred to as " the city ") is a
county borough under the government of the lord mayor
aldermen and citizens of the city (hereinafter referred to
as " the Corporation ") and the Corporation acting by the
council are the urban sanitary authority for the city:
And whereas the several local Acts and Provisional
or other Orders or parts thereof mentioned in the Eirst
Schedule to this Act are in force within the city which
Acts and Orders are in this Act collectively referred to as
" the former Acts " and each of them separately as an
Act or Order of the year in which the same was passed
or made the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Corporation Loans
Act 1882 and the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Corporation Act
1926 being referred to respectively as " the Loans Act of
1882 " and " the Corporation Act of 1926 ":
And whereas it is expedient that further and better
provision should be made for the health local government

and improvement of the city and that the powers of the
Corporation in regard thereto should be enlarged as in
this Act provided and that the provisions contained in
this Act for regulating the carrying on of employment
agencies in the city should be enacted :
And whereas the Corporation own and work an
extensive system of tramways and public service vehicles
both within and without the city and are by the Act
of
1934
authorised to run trolley vehicles on certain routes
in the city and the borough of Wallsend :
And whereas the Corporation under or by virtue of
the former Acts or some of them have from time to time
been authorised to borrow moneys for the purposes of
those Acts respectively and the various undertakings of
the Corporation :
And whereas the provisions contained in the former
Acts relating respectively to the tramway and trolley
vehicle undertakings of the Corporation and to the
finances of the city are numerous and complicated and it
is expedient that such of those provisions as have not
been superseded by subsequent legislation should be
amended and consolidated as by this Act provided and
that the further powers contained in this Act relating
to the said undertakings and to financial matters should
be conferred upon the Corporation :
And whereas it is expedient that the other provisions
contained in this Act should be made :
And whereas the purposes aforesaid cannot be
effected without the authority of Parliament:
And whereas in relation to the promotion of the
Bill for this Act the requirements of the Local Government
Act 1933 have been observed :
May it therefore please Your Majesty that it may
be enacted and be it enacted by the King's most Excellent
Majesty by and with the advice and consent of the Lords
Spiritual and Temporal and Commons in this present
Parliament assembled and by the authority of the same
as follows (that is to say):

PRELIMINARY.
Short title. 1. This Act may be cited as the Newcastle-upon-
Tyne Corporation (General Powers) Act 1935.

This Act is divided into Parts as follows :

In this Act unless the subject or context otherwise Interpre-
requires tation.
" The city " means the city and county of Newcastle-
upon-Tyne ;
" The Corporation " means the lord mayor aldermen
and citizens of the city acting by the council of
the city;
" The town clerk " " the treasurer " " the medical
officer " and " the sanitary inspector" mean
respectively the town clerk the treasurer the
medical officer and any sanitary inspector of the
city;
" The registrar " means the person for the time being
appointed by the Corporation as registrar in
pursuance of section 22 (Appointment of regis-
trar) of the Loans Act of 1882 or of the Stock
Regulations 1891 to 1932 or of regulations for
the time being in force under section 204
{Stock regulations) of the Local Government
Act 1933 (as the case may be);
" Street " has the meaning assigned to that word by
the Public Health Act 1875;
" The tramways " includes the tramways and tram-
roads described in Part I of the Second Schedule
to this Act and all tramways and tramroads for
the time being belonging or leased to or worked
by the Corporation and " tramway " includes
tramroad;
" The trolley vehicles " means the trolley vehicles
(as defined in the section of this Act of which the
