An Act for enabling the Company of Proprietors of
the Wilts and Berks Canal Navigation, to raife
Money for completing the faid Canal; and to alter,
explain, and amend the Act, pafled in the Thirty-
fifth Year of the Reign of His prefent Majefty, for
making the faid Canal. [ 20th June
1801.

HEREAS by an Aft pafled in the Thirty-fifth Year of the
Reign of His prefent Majefty, intituled, An Acl for making
and maintaining a Navigable Canal from the River Thames or |£
Ifis,
at or near the Town (if Abingdon, in the County of Berks,
to
join or
communicate
with the Kennet and Avon Canal'at or near the Town of Trow-
bridge, in the
County
of Wilts, and
alfo
certain Navigable Cuts therein de-
ferred,
certain Perfons therein named and defcribed, were united into a
Company for carrying on, making, completing, and maintaining the faid
Canal and Cuts, by the Name and Style of The Company of Proprietors
of //*?*Wilts and Berks Canal Navigation, in perpetual Succeffion, with a
Common Seal, and the faid Company were authorized to raife and con-
tribute among themfelves a competent Sum of- Money for making, carry-
ing on, and completing the faid Canal and Cuts, and the other Works
and Conveniencies to the fame belonging, not exceeding in the Whole

the Sum of One hundred and eleven thoufand nine hundred Pounds (ex-
cept as therein-after mentioned), which was to be divided into One thou-
fand one hundred and nineteen Shares of One hundred Pounds each;
and if the faid Sum fhould be found infufficient lor the Purpoies of the
faid Act, the faid Company of Proprietors were enabled to raife and con-
tribute among themfelves, m the Manner in the faid Act mentioned, any
further Sum or Sums of Money, not «scceeding in the Whole the Sum
of One hundred and fifty thauiattd Bounds; -and in cafe the faid Com-
pany fhould be defirous of raring the laid laft-mentioned Sum, or any
Part
thereof,
by Mortgage of the faid Undertaking, they were empowered
to borrow and take up at Intereft
all
or any Part of the faid Sum on the
Credit of the faid Underfaking, as to them fhould feem meet, and to
affign the feveral Tolls, Rates, and Duties arifing therefrom, as a Secu-
rity for any Sum or Sums fo to be lent: And whereas only Seventy-four
thoufand and one hundred Pounds, Part of the faid Sum of One hundred
and eleven thoufand nine hundred Pounds, amounting to Seven hundred
and forty-one Shares, of One hundred Pounds each, was originally fub-
fcribed; and only the Sum of Sixty-one thoufand five hundred and twelve
Pounds and Ten-pence, or thereabouts, has yet been actually paid; and
the Treafurer to the faid Company of Proprietors has advanced to them
the Sum of Three thoufand feven hundred and ninety-fix Pounds Fifteen
Shillings and Seven-pence, for which they have engaged to pay him In-
tereft ; and that all the Money fo raifed has been expended in the Profe-
cution of the Works of the faid Undertaking, and in carrying into Effect
the Purpofes of the faid Ad ; and the faid Company of Proprietors have
alfo incurred fundry other Debts in the Profecution of the faid Under-
taking, which are yet unfatisfied and owing by them: And whereas the
faid Company of Proprietors liave, in purfuance of the faid Act, pro-
ceeded in making and completing certain Parts of the faid Canal and
Cuts;
but it is found that much more Expence hath been and will be

Company of Proprietors have yet been able to raife, will be required to

complete the faid'Canal* Cuts, and other Works, by the faid A6fc autho-
rized to $£-made and done: And whereas the Powers and Provifions of
the fa^d Act have in other Refpects been found infufficient, anditfere-
i^ulfte that ^e fah*eShould be altered aed extended; may it therefore
pleafe Your Majefty that it may be enacted; and be it enacted by the
trig's tnoft Excellent Majefty, byalnd with the Advice and Confent of

and Wqtks, wer and above the faid Sum of One hundred and eleven
thoufand nine famdred Pounds, in the faid recked Act mentioned (al-
though die faid hft-menrioned Sum, by reafon of the Whole not being
fubfcribed for, amd tire Arrearages of Calls or Subferiptions, and Intereft
due on Sums advanced, hath noVbeen wholly raifed); and that the Mo«
ney to be raifed by virtue of this Act, fhall be applied in
