CHAPTER xiii.
An Act to confer further powers upon the mayor aldermen
and burgesses of the borough of Swindon in regard to
lands and to make further and better provision in
reference to the improvement health local government
and finances of the borough and for other purposes.
[18th July 1947.]
W
HEREAS the borough of Swindon in the county of
Wilts is a municipal borough under the government
and local management of the mayor aldermen and burgesses
of the borough (in this Act called " the Corporation "): .
And whereas by the Swindon

Berks Canal Abandonment) Act 1914 a reservoir (thenc-CA m-
known as the Coate reservoir) and the land surrounding the
same (all of which are in this preamble called " Coate
Water ") were transferred to the Corporation subject to the
provisions of that Act and the Corporation were authorised
to use Coate Water as a public park:
And whereas the Corporation are the owners of the mansion
and park land formerly forming part of the Lydiard Park
estate and certain other lands in the neighbourhood thereof
(all of which lands are in this preamble referred to as
" Lydiard Park ") :
And whereas Lydiard Park has been designated a public
park:
And whereas the Corporation are the owners of the man-
sion and park land known as the Lawn and certain other
lands in the neighbourhood thereof (all of which lands
are in this preamble referred to as " the Lawn "):

And whereas it is expedient to confer further powers upon
the Corporation in regard to Coate Water Lydiard Park
and the Lawn and to enact further provisions in regard
thereto:
And whereas it is expedient to make further and better
provision with regard to the improvement health and local
government of the borough and that the powers of the
Corporation in regard thereto should be enlarged as is
provided in this Act:
And whereas it is expedient to make further provision in
regard to the finances of the Corporation:
And whereas it is expedient to empower the Corporation
by agreement with the Institute of Municipal Treasurers and
Accountants (Incorporated) to admit the employees of that
institute to participate in the benefits of the superannuation
fund of the Corporation:
And whereas it is expedient that the other provisions con-
tained in this Act be enacted:
And whereas the purposes of this Act cannot be effected.
without the authority of Parliament:
And whereas in relation to the promotion of the Bill for

this Act the requirements of Part XIII of the Local Govern-

' ment Act 1933 have been observed:
May it therefore please Your Majesty that it may be enacted
and be it enacted by the King's most Excellent Majesty by
and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and
Temporal and Commons in this present Parliament assembled
and by the authority of the same as follows:

Short title. 1. This Act may be cited as the Swindon Corporation Act

the Lands Clauses Consolidation Act 1845 and except the —cont.
provisions with respect to the purchase and taking of lands Incorporation

4.—(1) In this Act the several words and expressions to interpretation.

(2) In this Act unless the subject or context otherwise
requires the several words and expressions to which meanings
are assigned by the Acts wholly or partially incorporated with
this Act shall have the same respective meanings And
" The borough " means the borough of Swindon;
"' The Corporation " means the mayor aldermen and
burgesses of the borough of Swindon;
" The council " means the council of the borough;
" The town clerk " " the treasurer" " the surveyor "
" the medical officer " and " the sanitary inspector "
mean respectively the town clerk the treasurer the
surveyor the medical officer of health and any sani-
tary inspector of the borough;
" The county " means the administrative county of
Wilts;
" The county council " means the county council of the
county;
" The general rate fund " and " the general rate " mean
respectively the general rate fund and the general rate
of the borough;
" The Minister " means the Minister of Health';
" The Act of 1936 " means the Public Health Act 1936;
"The Public Health Acts" means the Public Health 38
&

Act 1875 and the Acts amending and extending the c- 55'
same;
" The Act of 1933 " means the Local Government Act
1933;
" The Act of 1937 " means the Local Government Super- 1 Edw. 8. &
annuation Act 1937; 1 Geo. 6. c. 68.
" Child " has the same meaning as in the Education Act 7 & 8 Ge°- 6-
1944;
