REGIS. ^******^*****^***#***^^#**************************** Cap. 97- An A& for making more effectual Provifion for maintaining, regulating, and employing the Poor of the Pariih of Saint Luke in the County of Mtddlefex. [3d **i8o8.] W HEREAS the Pariih of Saint Luke, in the County of Midd/efex, was formerly Part (and was called the Lordfhip Part) of the Parifh of Saint Giles* Cripplegate, and was feparated therefrom, and became a diftinft Parifh, under and by virtue of an A& paffed in the Sixth Year of the Reign of King George the Second, intituled An A£t for providing a Maintenance for the Refior of the New Church, 6 G.z. c.31, near Old-Street, in the Parijh of Saint Giles, Cripplegate, and for making that Part of the faid Parifh, which is calledHhe Lordfhip Part, a diftinit Parifh, and for empowering the Commijfioners for building of the Fifty New Churches, to apply a Sum of Money to wall in the faid Church and Church-yard, and to ereft a Houfe for the Habitation of the Redor of the faid Church, out of the Money appropriated for the Endowment of the faid Fifty New Churches: And whereas an A& was paffed in the Thirtieth Year of the Reign of His Majefty King George the Second, [Loc. £sf PerJ] ao O intituled i8o2 48aGEORGH III. Caf.97. 30G.2.C.42. intituled An AB for the afceriaining and colleSing the Poors* Rates, and for the better ordering and regulating the Poor in the Parifh of Saint Luke, 2.2G.3.C.56. in the County of Middlefex: And whereas another Aft was paffed in the Twenty-fecond Year of the Reign of His prefent Majefty, intituled An AB more effeBually to enable the Inhabitants of the Parifh of Saint Luke, in the County of Middlefex, to purchafe, hire9 or ereB a Workhoufe within or near the faid Parifh9 for the better Reception and Employment of the Poor of the faid Parifh: And whereas the Provifions of the faid recited Aft of the Sixth Year of the Reign of His Majefty King George the Second, as to making the faid Parifh of Saint Luke a diftinft Parifh, and making Provifion for the Reftor of the faid Parifh, in Manner therein mentioned, have long fmce been carried into Execution: And whereas the Provifions of the faid recited Aft of the Twenty-fecond Year of the Reign of His prefent Majefty have alfo been carried into Execution, fo far as the fame relate to the erefting of a Workhoufe for the better Reception and Employment of the Poor of the faid Parifh, and large Sums of Money have been expended therein: And whereas fince the paffing of the faid Afts of * Parliament the Number of the Inhabitants of the faid Parifh, and the Amount of the Sums collefted for the Relief and Maintenance of the Poor thereof, have greatly increafed, and Debts to a confiderable Amount are now owing by the faid Parifh, for Sums of Money borrowed and expended under the Provifions of the faid laft recited Aft, and for the Relief and Maintenance of the Poor of the faid Parifh: And whereas many of the Provifions of the laid recited Afts are inadequate to the carrying into Execution the Purpofes thereof in relation to the Relief of the Poor of the faid Parifh, and the raifing the Rates for that Purpofe; and it is neceflary that the fame fhould be altered, .amended, and enlarged: And whereas it would greatly tend to facilitate the Execution of the Powers now become neceffary, if the fame were reduced into One Aft: Be it therefore enafted by the King's moft Excellent Majefty, by and with the Advice and Content of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Common^, in this prefent Parliament affembled, and by the Authority of -6 & 30 G. 2. the fame, That fo much of the faid recited Aft of the Sixth Year of and 22 G. 3. the Reign of His late Majefty King George the Second, as enafts,"That repealed. ^e Re&or Gf the faid Church, and the Churchwardens and Overfeersfor the Poor of the faid new intended Parifh for the Time being, and all other Perfons who have ferved, or paid Fines for being excufed from ferving all Offices in and for the faid Diftrift, or new intended Parifh, or who from Time to Time hereafter fhall ferve, or by the Veftry be admitted to pay Fines for being excufed from ferving all Offices in or for the faid new intended Parifh, fo long as they refpeftively fhall continue Houfeholders within the faid new intended Parifh, and paying to the Poors* Rates, fhall be the Veftrymen, for the Time being, of the faid new intended Parifh, and fhall meet from Time to Time, upon public Notice - to be openly read and publifhed in the faid Church, by Order of the Reftor, Churchwardens, and Overfeers of the Poor, or either of them, on the Lord's Day next preceding, immediately after Divine Service," fhall be, and the fame is hereby repealed; and that the faid feveral Afts, paffed in the Thirtieth Year of .the Reign of His late Majefty King George the Second, and the Twenty- 5 fecond 48GEORGlI III. Cap.Q?. 1803 fecond Year of the Reign of His prefent Majefty, fhall be and the fame are hereby repealed. II. And be it further enafted, That all Perfons qualified at the Time Veftrymen of the paffing of this Act to be Veftrymen, by-reafon of having ferved ofthe Panfh all Offices, or of having paid Fines for being excufed from ferving all Qualifies Offices, in and for the faid Parifh, according to the Provifions of the Uons. faid recited Act of the Sixth Year of the Reign of His late Majefty King George the Second, fhall remain and continue Veftrymen of the faid Parifh, and be entitled to act and vote as Veftrymen of the faid Parifh; any Thing in this Act contained to the contrary thereof in anywife notwithftanding: And fuch Perfons, together with the Rector of the faid Parifh, for the Time being, and the Churchwardens and Overfeers of the Poor of the faid Pariih^ for the Time'being, and all Perfons who may hereafter ferve either of the faid Offices of Churchwardens and Overfeers of the Poor of the faid Parifti, or who fhall hereafter pay the Fines impofed by this Aft for refufing or neglefting to ferve the Offices of Churchwardens and Overfeers of the Poor of the faid Parifli, fo long as fuch Perfons fhall continue to be Houfeholders within the laid Parifh, and rated to the Relief of the Poor thereof j and all Perfons being Houfeholders inhabiting within the faid Parifli, rated to the Relief of the Poor in the faid Parifh, for the Houfea and Premifes which they refpeftively inhabit and occupy, at not lefs than Thirty Pounds per Annum, fhall be the Veftrymen of the faid Parifh for the Time being; and fuch Veftrymen fhall have and exercife all fuch and the like Powers as have heretofore been exercifed and pofTeffed by the Veftrymen of the faid Parifh, under and by virtue of the faid recited Aft, paffed in the Sixth Year of the Reign of His late Majefty King George the Second, and as may by Law be ufed and exercifed by the Veftrymen of any Parifh, except when and as by this Aft any particular Provifions are made in relation to the Powers of the Veftrymen of the faid Parifh. III. Provided always, and be it further enafted, That nothing in Not to affeA this Aft contained fhall extend to, or be deemed or conftrued to alter, 33 G-3* f*?3* cis to ccrt&iri any of the Provifions of an Aft paffed in the Thirty-third Year of the Perfons being Reign of His prefent Majefty, intituled An Ail for the better lighting, Veftrymen cleanfing, watching, and regulating the Squares Streets^ Lanes, Alleys, and Truftees Pajfages, and Places within the Parifh of Saint Luke, in the County ae#r * of Middlefex, and for removing and preventing Nuifances, Annoyances, and Encroachments within the fame; but that the Reftor, Church^ wardens, and Overfeers of the Poor for the Time being, and all other Perfons who fhall have ferved or paid, or fhall hereafter ferve or pay Fines for being excufed from ferving all Offices in and for the faid Parifh, fhall remain and be, and be deemed Veftrymen for the Purpofes of the faid Aft, and Truftees for putting the fame into Execution as therein direfted, and fhall have the Power from Time to Time of eleft-ing and choofing their own Clerk or Clerks, as if this Aft had not paffed; any Thing to the contrary in this Aft, or in the faid Aft contained, notwithftanding, IV.
