certain Branches therefrom.

HEREAS the making
of
a Railway from
Manchester
in the
County
of
Lancaster
to
unite with
the
Grand Junction
Railway at
or
near the Hammer Houses in the Parish
of
Che6sey
in the County
of
Staford,
with Branches therefiom to
Mac-
clesjield
in the County
of
Chester,
and to
Crewe
in the same County,
to unite
at
Crewe
aforesaid with the said Grand Junction Railway,
would be
of
great public Advantage
:
And whereas the Queen’s most
Excellent Majesty in right of the Crown is or claims to be seised
of
the
Manor and Borough
of
Macdesfield
in the County
of Chester,
and in
right of Her Duchy
ofLancaster
is interested in certain Property
on
the Line
of
the proposed Railway
:
And whereas the several Persons
herein-after named, with other Persons, are willing
at
their own
Ex-
pence to carry into execlition the said Undertaking, but the same can-
not be effected without the Authority of Parliament
:
May
it
therefore
please Your Majesty that it may be enacted

and be it enacted by the
Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the Advice and Consent
of
the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parlia-

Two several Subscription Contracts,
the one bearing Date the Eleventh Day of
March
One thousand eight
hundred and thirty-six, and purporting to be entered into by
a
Company then intended to be established by the Style of the
South
Union Railway Company,” and the other bearing Date the Third
Day
of
January
One thousand eight hundred and thirty-seven, pur-
porting to be entered into by
a
Company then intended to be estab-
lished by the Style
of
the

Manchester, Cheshire,
and

Railway Company,”
or
who shall hereafter subscribe towards the
Undertaking
by
this Act authorized, and their several and respective
Successors, Executors, Administrators, and Assigns, shall be and they
are hereby united into
a
Company for making and maintaining the
Railway, and for executing the other Works by this Act authorized
according to the Provisions and Restrictions herein-after mentioned,
and for that Purpose shall be One Body Corporate by the Name
and Style of

Railway Company,”
and by that Name shall have perpetual Succession and
a
Common
Seal,
ancl
by that Name
shall
and may sue and be sued, and also
sliall have Power and Authority to purchase and hold Lands, Tene-
ments, and Hereditaments to them and their Successors
and
Assigns,
for the Use of the said Undertaking, without incurring any
of
the
Penalties or Forfeitures
of
the Statutes of Mortmain, and shall have
and exercise all such other Powers and Authorities
as
are herein-after
given, or as may be necessary for carrying the several Purposes
herein-after mentioned into full and complete Effect.

And be it further enacted,

in the Construction
of
this
&4ct every Word importing the Singular Number only shall extend
and be applied to several Persons or Things
as
well
as
one Person or
Thing, and every Word importing the Plural Number shall extend
and be applied to one Person or Thing
as
well as several Persons or
Things
;
and every Word importing the Masculine Gender only shall
extend and be applied
to
a
Peniale as well as
a
Male
;
and the Word
‘‘
Lands” shall extend
to
Messuages, Lands, Tenements, and Here-
ditaments of any Tenure
;
and where the Word
Company”
is
used,
the
same sliall be understood
to
mean the said

and other Works intended to be executed by virtue

this Act

niences connected therewith, for the Passage of locomotive and other
Engines, Coaches,

haises, Waggons, Carts, and other Carriages, and
for fixing stationary Engines, and landing, depositing, and warehousing
of Goods and Conveyance of Passengers in the Line or Course, and
upon, across, under, or over the Lands delineated on the Plan and
described in the Book of Reference herein-after directed to be depo-
sited with the Clerks of the Peace for the Counties
ofLamaster,
Chester,
and
Staford
;
that
is
to say, such Railway to commence in
Store Street
at or near the
London
Road
End
thereof in the Township
and Parish
ofManchester
in the County
oflamaster,
and to terminate
by a Junction with the Grand Junction Railway at or near the
Hammer Houses in the Parish of
Chebsey
in the County of
Staford;
and
also
to make and maintain a Branch Railway from and out of the
said Railway to commence at
or
near
Edgeley Street
in the Parish and
Township of

and to terminate
