building and maintaining
a
Bridewell there.
HEREAS
it would be greatly for the Benefit and Advantage
of
the Inhabitants
of
the Burgh
of
Dandee
and its Suburbs,
if
W
the Streets, Ways, Lanes, and Passages thereof were better
watched, paved, cleansed, and lighted, and
it
would tend to the
good Order and Regulation of the said Burgh and Suburbs, if an
effi-
cient and general System
of
Police were established, and if a Bridewell
or
House of Correction were erected and maintained therein
:
But
as
these Purposes cannot be accomplished without the Aid and Authority
of
Parliament: May it therefore please Your Majesty that
it
may
be
enacted; and be it enacted by the King’s
most
Excellent Majesty,
by
and
with
the Advice
and
Consent of the Lords Spiritual and
Tem-
poral, and Commons,
in
this present Parliament assembled, and by the
Authority
of
the same, That the Powers and Regulations herein-after
Bounds
to
contained
for
the Establishment
of
a general System of Police, and
for
which
this
other Purposes, shall extend over the Royalty
of
the Burgh of
Dundee
Act
is
to
and
the whole Grounds and Houses locally situated and comprehended
within the following Limits;
videlicet,
within
a
Line commencing on
the
East
at
the
River
Tay,
and rl;nning Northwards
in
the Line
of
the
East
March
of
Mayje/d
on the Lands
of
Craigie,
to
the
Southern Extremity
of
[Local.]

to
the Turnpike Road leading
from
Dundee
to
Arbroath
;
thence Eastward along that Turnpike Road
until its Junction with the old
Craigie
Road
;
Northwards along
that
Road to the
Stobsmuir
Turnpike Road
;
across that Road, and from it
along the old Road by the Back
of
Stobsmuir
and
Clpington,
till
it reaches the East Road to the
Fair
Muir,
around the March
of
the
Fair Muir,
so
as
to
include it, until it joins the
Strath-
martin
Turnpike Road
;
Southwards along the
Sirathmartin
Turn-
pike Road until its Junction with the Road which leads by the
Back of the
Law

the
Coupar
and
Meigle
Turnpike Road

along the Northern Boundary
of
that Road
to
the
Lochee
Toll Bar, on the Turnpike Road from
Dudet
to
Coupar
and
Meigb

from that Toll Bar Westwards along the Road
until
it
reaches the Stone Wall which
runs
on the
West
Side of the
Houses
and Garden Ground known by
the
Name of
Lark
or
Lerrick
Hall;
across from the Turnpike Road to the March between the Estate
of
Logie
and the Estate
of
Balgay
;
from the Turnpike Road Southwards
along that Stone Wall to the said March; thence along the March South-
wards
to
the Extremity of
Logie
;
thence Southwards
to
the
Blackness
Road, along the Dyke and Hedge which form the present Boundary
between
Blackness
and
Balgay
;
thence along the Northern Boundary of
the
Blackness
Road Westwards to the Line
of
the March which
is
on
the
South Side of that Road, between
Blackness
and
Balgay
;
and Southwards
along that March down to the River
Tay.
Bounds
to
be
11. And be it further enacted, That for the more effectual Execution
distributed
of
the Powers hereby granted, the said Burgh and Places, within the
lowing
into
the

herein-before described, shall be divided into the following Districts

Street
and the Turnpike
Road leading from
Dundee
to
Arbroath;
on
the
East
by tho Eastern
Boundary before described of the Limits
to
which this Act extends

on the South by the River
Tay;

Saint Andrew’s
Street
and
Trades Lane
;
and
to
comprehend the whole Space within
these Bounds.
Ward Second, to be bounded on the North by the
Cowgate
and
Murray-
gate
Streets, as far West as to include the
Trades Hall;
on the West
by
the
High Street
and
Castle Strcet,
and the West Quay of the Wet
Dock
;
on the South’by the River
;
and on the East by
Saint Andrew’s
Street
and
Trader Lane;
and to comprehend the whole Space within
these Bounds.
Ward Third,
to
be bounded on the North by the
High Street
and
Nether-
gate Street
(exclusive
of
the
English
Chapel), as far West as the Lane
known by the Name
of
the
Slate
or
Sea
Wynd;
on the West by the
said
Slate
or
Sea Wynd;
on the South by the River
;
and on the East
by
Castle
Street
and the West Quay
of
the Wet Dock
;
and to com-
prehend the whole Space within these Bounds.
Ward Fourth, to be bounded on the North
by
the
Nethergate Street
West
from the
Slate
or
Sea Wynd,
and by the Turnpike Road leading from
Dundee
to
Perth
;
on the West by the Western Boundary before de-
scribed
of
the Limits
to
which this Act extends
;

the South by the

Slate

Ward Seventh, to be bounded on the West by the
Barrack
Road from
the Road or Street along the North Side of the Meadows known by
the Name
of
Bell’s Street
Northwards, by the
Constitution Brae,
and
thence by the Road leading along the West Side of
Stirling’s Park
and the East Side of
The
Law,
until it reaches the North Boundary
before described of the Limits to which this Act extends

the South
and East by
Bell’s Street,
by the Close
or
Passage leading
from
the East End
of
BelZ’s Street
Northward, by the West Side

Tannage
Yard;

Roads to the Northern Boundary of the Limits to which
this Act extends

the West End

Bdl’s Street;

Bell Street,
the before mentioned Passage
leading from the East End

Bell’s Street,
Northward,

the West

of the
Tannage

from the North End of that Passage

Passage leading

Ladywell

the
